He is well-known for his world record-setting adventures in balloons, sailboats, gliders, and powered aircraft. He held over 100 records in five different sports from sailing to flying to (most notably) ballooning. Steve Fossett circum-navigated the earth in a balloon. Adventurer Steve Fossett went missing over western Nevada on the night of 03 September 2007. He disappeared after taking off from a ranch for a brief recreational flight in a single-engine plane. Somewhere across a landscape of soaring peaks and sagebrush desert notorious for winds so powerful and tricky they can swirl an airplane like a leaf and even shear off a wing. Only missing for a day or two when his friend, billionaire Richard Branson, told reporters that he was talking with Google, hoping that the company's storehouse of satellite images might help locate the missing aviator. Then, Amazon Mechanical Turk was used to aid in the search. Up to 50,000 people hunted in a distributed search using satellite images and Amazon's Mechanical Turk. At least one searcher completed over 728 images.
