(read on for )Buddhism is a set of teachings often described as a non-theistic religion and a body of philosophies influenced by the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, known as Gautama Buddha. Many consider Buddhism not a religion, but teachings to guide one to directly experience reality.
There are different divisions, or classifications, of Buddhism such as Theraveda, Mahayana, East Asian Buddhism, and Tibetan Buddhism.
A buddha is generally considered to be a person who discovers the true nature of reality through spiritual cultivation, investigation of the various religious practices of his time, and meditation. This process takes many life times.
Some common threads to almost all Buddhist branches are: 1) All accept the Buddha as their teacher, 2) All accept the Middle Way, Dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path in theory, 3) All accept that both the members of the laity and of the Sangha can pursue the path toward enlightenment, 4) All consider Buddhahood to be the highest attainment.
Buddhism is a fertile ground for comparative studies. In term of doctrine, dependent origination is Buddhism's primary contribuion to metaphysics.
Buddhism has been able to peacefully coexist with various local beliefs, customs, and institutions in adopted countries for most of its history!
